As an example, a 6' rectangular table seats six comfortably with three down each side, but you can add a chair at the head and the foot and bump the guest count up to eight. The corner guests end up a little closer to their neighbors, which is fine for a casual gathering but might be worth avoiding for a plated meal where everyone needs a full 24” of table space.

Should I Get Round or Rectangular Tables?

Round tables are better for conversation. Everybody at a 60" round can see everybody else, and nobody is stuck talking to one person all night. That's why they're the standard at wedding receptions and seated dinners.

Rectangular tables are more versatile. You can set them up on their own to save space, you can put them end to end to form one long family-style table, or you can get artistic with them and form “U-shape”, square-shaped, or angled layouts.

Rectangular/banquet tables are also the only tables that do double duty: our 6’ and 8’ banquet tables can hold a buffet line, a gift display, a cake, a DJ setup, or a bar.

A lot of events end up with a mix of both, so feel free to get a little creative (and we’re always available to help you plan it out!).

They're the same table at two different heights.

Our cocktail tables for rent are 42" tall. That's standing height. Guests gather around them with a drink in hand, and there are no chairs. Four or five people fit around one comfortably. These are what you want for a cocktail hour, a mingling reception, or the open area around a bar.

What's the difference between a cocktail table and a bistro table?

Note: For a standing reception, plan on one cocktail table for every 15 to 20 guests. You don’t have to give everyone their own dedicated spot. The idea is simply to give guests a super low-commitment opportunity to mingle with one another ;p

Our bistro tables, on the other hand, are 30" tall. That's the same height as a dining table, so guests sit at them in regular chairs. Two to four chairs fit around one bistro table. These work well for small seated groupings, a lounge corner, or any event where you want seating without committing to full dinner tables.

Which tables might I need that aren't for guests?

Guest seating is easy to count. What gets missed is everything else your event needs a surface for:

  • Buffet line - one or two 8' tables, depending on how many dishes you’re serving

  • Cake and desserts - one 6' table

  • Gifts and cards - one 6' table

  • Sign-in or guest book - one or two cocktail tables

  • DJ or band - one 8' table, sometimes two

  • Catering prep behind the scenes - one or two 8' tables, and your caterer will usually tell you

Even at an event where all the guest seating is round tables, plan on two to four rectangular tables for serving and staging. For a larger reception, it's often more.

Can you mix table shapes at one event?

Yes, and doing so is very common.

The usual pattern is rounds for guest seating with rectangles handling the buffet, bar, cake, and gifts. Nobody reads that as mismatched, because each shape is doing an obvious job.

Mixing shapes within your guest seating takes a little more thought. A few rectangles among the rounds can work well when there's a reason for it: a long table for the family, a run of rectangles down the center with rounds along the edges, or rectangles in a narrow part of the room where rounds won't fit. What doesn't work as well is mixing shapes with no pattern to it, which reads as running out of one and filling in with the other.

Head tables / Sweetheart tables are almost always rectangular. A 6' head table seats two or three people on one side facing the room, and an 8' head table can seat four, and you can run two or three together for larger wedding parties.

Do I really need tablecloths?

You only really need tablecloths if you want tablecloths, either to make your tables look a bit more refined, or to have full control over the tabletop color, texture, and sheen.

That said, we provide tables that are in good shape. They're cleaned very thoroughly after every event and they look it, so a bare table at a backyard barbecue, a casual birthday, or a kids party looks intentional rather than unfinished. Plenty of our customers rent tables with no linens at all.

Linens earn their cost when you want the room to feel finished. A floor-length cloth hides table legs, covers the gap between tables pushed together, softens the sound in a hard room, and gives you a color to build the rest of the table around. For a wedding, a formal dinner, or anything that's going to be photographed a lot, they change the look of the room completely.
